About Us

The Association was established at its first inaugural meeting on 11^th November 1972. The first President was Salim Baksh, a former government archivist and then Assistant Librarian at the University of the South Pacific. Since that time, FLA has grown in size and stature. Membership, which is open to any person or organization interested in library and information services, averages around 150 from throughout Fiji and overseas. A Council comprising of eight members is elected on a yearly basis. The council members provide voluntary service to administer the Association.

 

Over the years the Association has been involved in various activities - public meetings, conventions, raising public awareness, submissions and proposals to appropriate authorities (including government), National Library Week, panel discussions, media interviews, as well as social events organised for the enjoyment of members. FLA was instrumental in the establishment of vocational training in the field of librarianship in the region and has been involved in continuing education through workshops etc.

 

Although Fiji is a country of many islands, great effort has been made by the Association to ensure that activity takes place on as wide a basis as possible and is not confined or limited to the major urban centres.
